👉GRAMMAR -(으)시

-(으)시- attached to a verb or an adjective, indicates to respect the subject of the sentence. (-(이)시- is used for a noun.) When a stem of a verb or an adjective in a vowel or the final consonant, ㄹ, -시- is added. When a stem of a verb or an adjective ends in all consonants other than ㄹ, -으시- is added.

👉EXAMPLE:

 •나가(다) ends vowel + -시- = 나가시 +
      ending conjugation future tense 었어요 to become 나가셨어요.

•작(다) ends consonant + 으시-=작으시 + ending conjugation present tense 어요 =작으세요.

•크(다) ends 으 irregular verb + -시-= 크시 + ending conjugation present tense 어요 =크세요.

가: 사장님 지금 계세요?
    (Are u inside..boss)
나: 조금 전에 나가셨어요.
    (I just left.)

가: 타타 씨의 아버지는 키가 크세요?
    (Is Tata's father tall?)
나: 아니요, 키가 작으세요.
    (No..his height is short)

가: 투안 씨, 이 옷 새로 샀어요?
    (Mr. Tuan, did you buy a new one?)
나: 아니요, 고향에서 어머니가 보내 주셨어요.
    (No, my mother sent me from home.)

👉CONVERSATION:
리 한:
 지훈 씨, 제가 한국 친구 집에 초대를 받았는데 어른이
계시는 집에 처음 가는 거라서 좀 걱정돼요. 그래서 몇 가지 물어보고 싶은 게 있어요.
I was invited to my Korean friend’s house, but it’s my fi rst time visiting a house where the elderly live. So, I am a little worried, and would like to ask you a couple of questions.

지 훈:
 어떤 게 알고 싶어요?
What would you like to know?

리 한:
 어른들께 어떤 선물을 드리면 좋을까요?
What kinds of gifts would you recommend for them?

지 훈:
 보통 과일이나 음료수를 많이 선물해요. 그런데 어른들이 좋아하시는
것을 물어보고 사 가세요. 그리고 선물을 드릴 때는 두 손으로 드리세요.
Usually we buy fruits or drinks, but it’s better to ask what they like before you buy. Also remember to use both hands when giving.
